What you’ll do / learn
Sign on and prepare for duty
- Sign on for duty at the designated workplace.
- Receive duties to be completed during the shift.
- Determine which locomotive must be prepared.
- Obtain and place the prescribed equipment on the locomotive.
- Check and supplement the required locomotive equipment.
- Clean and prepare the working area.
- Assist with starting locomotives.
- Assist with locomotive brake tests.
- Assist with coupling and dispatching locomotives.
Prepare communication equipment
- Obtain radios, handsets, walkie-talkies or telemeters where applicable.

Complete pre-trip train preparation
- Assist with preparing locomotives and the complete train before departure.
