What this opportunity is

This is an entry-level learning and workplace-development opportunity within OVK’s agricultural retail business.

Successful candidates will receive practical exposure to retail operations and work alongside an established retail team. The programme is intended to help learners develop new skills and understand how OVK’s retail business operates.

The available application pages are linked to individual OVK locations. Applicants should select a town where they can report reliably if accepted into the programme.

What the programme offers

  • Practical exposure within OVK’s retail business.
  • Experience working alongside an agricultural retail team.
  • Opportunities to learn workplace and retail skills.
  • Exposure to customer service and marketing.
  • Insight into commerce and agricultural operations.
  • Development of communication, numerical and interpersonal skills.
  • A nationally recognised NQF Level 5 qualification after successful completion.

The qualification is awarded only after successful completion of the prescribed programme requirements. Being accepted into the learnership does not mean that the qualification has already been earned.

Minimum requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric.
  • An interest in pursuing a career in commerce and agriculture.
  • An interest in customer service.
  • An interest in marketing.
  • A copy of the applicant’s latest school report must accompany the application.
  • Applicants must complete the location-specific online application form.

Advantageous Grade 12 subjects

The following Grade 12 subjects will be advantageous:

  • Mathematics.
  • Accounting.
  • Agricultural subjects.
  • Business subjects.

These subjects are listed as advantageous rather than compulsory. The minimum academic requirement remains Grade 12.

The application questionnaire also includes Mathematics Literacy among the subjects applicants may select. Candidates should choose only the subjects they actually completed and should not change Mathematics Literacy to Mathematics on their application.

School report or Matric certificate requirement

The main vacancy description specifically states that a copy of the applicant’s latest school report must be submitted with the application.

The online questionnaire asks whether the applicant submitted either a latest school report or a Matric certificate.

Applicants who have already completed Matric should prepare their Matric certificate or official statement of results. Current Grade 12 learners should prepare their latest available school report.

Where possible, applicants should upload both their latest school report and Matric results if both documents are available and the supporting-document section allows this.

Skills and competencies

  • Good communication skills.
  • Good language skills in Afrikaans and English.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office.
  • Numerical ability.
  • Ability to function under pressure.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Interest in customer service.
  • Interest in retail marketing.
  • Willingness to learn new skills.
  • Ability to work with an established retail team.

Language requirement explained

The official vacancy lists good communication and language skills in both Afrikaans and English.

The advert does not specify a formal language certificate or a minimum proficiency level. Applicants should describe their genuine spoken and written language abilities accurately.

Who may find this programme suitable

  • Recent matriculants seeking an entry-level opportunity.
  • Current Grade 12 learners who will complete Matric before the programme begins.
  • Applicants interested in agricultural retail.
  • Applicants interested in commerce, customer service or marketing.
  • Applicants who want practical workplace exposure.
  • Candidates interested in completing an NQF Level 5 qualification.
  • Applicants who can travel reliably to one of the listed OVK locations.

The online form asks which year the applicant completed or expects to complete Grade 12. This indicates that current matriculants may apply, provided they can supply the required school results and complete Grade 12 as required.

Experience requirement

The vacancies are classified as entry level, and the official description does not require previous employment experience.

Applicants may still include genuine school leadership, volunteering, customer-service, computer, entrepreneurship or community experience on their CVs where relevant.

Any informal or volunteer experience should be described accurately and should not be presented as paid employment if it was unpaid.

Programme duration and working arrangements

OVK classifies the programme as a contract opportunity but does not state the contract duration.

The vacancies also do not specify the programme commencement date, daily working hours, shift arrangements, weekend requirements or public-holiday availability.

Applicants should confirm the programme duration, training schedule, workplace location and attendance requirements if shortlisted or offered a place.

Stipend and programme costs

The official vacancies do not confirm whether learners will receive a stipend, and no stipend amount is published.

The adverts also do not state whether OVK will provide transport, accommodation, meals, uniforms or study materials.

Applicants should not rely on unofficial payment amounts shared on social media. Any remuneration and programme conditions should be confirmed from an official written offer.

Location and transport considerations

Each vacancy is linked to a specific town. Applicants should select a location they can reach reliably for the duration of the programme.

The official adverts do not mention accommodation, relocation assistance or transport support. Applicants should therefore consider their own travel and accommodation arrangements before applying to a distant location.

Submitting applications for several towns may be possible, but candidates should apply only where they are genuinely available to work and attend training.
