The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Regional Office for Southern Africa is offering a 6-month Human Rights Internship based in Pretoria, starting in January 2026. The internship provides graduate students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in human rights research, analysis, and advocacy across the Southern African region. Interns will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Representative and Human Rights Officer, supporting various projects and initiatives related to human rights promotion, monitoring, and engagement with state and civil society partners.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct substantive research and analysis on human rights issues in the Southern African subregion.
  • Prepare analytical briefs, updates, and reports, including gender-specific perspectives.
  • Collect and analyze human rights data and indicators.
  • Support engagement with States, National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs), and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs).
  • Assist with coordination of activities promoting State party engagement with UN human rights mechanisms.
  • Provide support for the implementation of recommendations from international human rights mechanisms.
  • Assist in developing and delivering training programmes on human rights, democracy, and rule of law.
  • Serve as note-taker in meetings and assist in drafting communications, briefings, and statements.
  • Support general administrative, research, and outreach activities of the Regional Office.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Enrolled in a graduate programme (Master’s or equivalent) or in the final year of a Bachelor’s degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations, or Social Sciences.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required; knowledge of French and/or Portuguese is an advantage.
  • Must have legal permission to work or intern in South Africa (if not a citizen or permanent resident).
  • Applicants must cover their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses.
