This learnership will be held in Pretoria, Gauteng.

What is SARB?

The SARB promotes South Africans’ economic well-being by ensuring pricing and financial stability.

It regulates the South African financial industry, designs and distributes banknotes and coins, manages interest rates, sets the cash reserve requirement for banks, and ensures the stability of both the banking sector and the larger financial system.

What is This Internship Program?

This internship program will give recent graduates the chance to enter the working world in their chosen profession and gain much-needed experience and exposure to the field all while being under the supervision of a notable and esteemed institution.

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is inviting productive and talented postgraduates to join its one-year Graduate Development Programme (Program) in January 2024.

The Benefits of this program:

  • Exposure to the SARB’s departments
  • From January through December 2024, graduates will work and learn in the SARB Head Office. They will be allocated to a department and given numerous duties and projects to complete.
  • Graduates will participate in a variety of learning interventions at the SARB Academy throughout the Program. Interventions are mostly focused on central banking and are intended to produce well-rounded central bankers. Graduates will also develop personal and professional skills such as assertive communication, public speaking, and presentations, making effective PowerPoint presentations, impactful reporting, collaboration, and personal excellence and etiquette as part of the comprehensive curriculum.

After the first year:

Some graduates will be permanently hired to SARB departments at the conclusion of the year. Graduates who have completed the following courses are the most likely to get appointed:

  • are interested in advancing their careers at the SARB;
  • having an interest in monetary policy, financial stability, currency management, overseeing financial institutions, financial markets, or any of the SARB’s enabling duties;
  • having exhibited behaviors consistent with the SARB’s principles of responsibility, excellence, honesty, respect and trust, and open communication;
  • can work independently as well as engage actively and successfully in a team; and
  • have excelled in their designated fields as well as intellectually.


Applications are open to candidates who have a postgraduate qualification in one of the following fields:

  • Economics
  • Econometrics research
  • Policy analysis
  • Public finance
  • Accounting
  • Auditing
  • Statistics
  • Financial management
  • Information technology
  • Law
  • Portfolio or investment management
  • Mathematics
  • Quantitative analysis
  • Business analysis
  • Project management
  • Risk management (operational and financial risk), treasury, or international relations.

Please make sure you meet ALL of the following minimum entrance requirements before submitting your application because if you don’t, your application will be rejected:

  • Possess a postgraduate degree.
  • Having achieved an average of more than 65% in your last year.
  • A strong ambition to work in financial services and/or policymaking.
  • Having a demonstrated track record of academic excellence.
  • Have exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • You are a South African citizen; and
  • You are an inquisitive and eager student.
