What is The Institute for the Advancement of Journalism?

A training center for journalism and communication is called the Institution for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), and it is situated in Johannesburg.

The IAJ educates aspiring communicators and journalists with the goal of fostering the nation’s free and independent media.

More than 10,000 media and communication professionals have received training from the organization across Africa over its 27 years of operation.

IAJ’s reputation as a place that celebrates the role of the media in democracy is furthered by the interactive learning that is provided there and by subject-matter experts.

What is This Learnership Program?

Candidates interested in a career in journalism are offered a learnership opportunity by the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism.

Both in-person and online sessions of the program will be held at the IAJ’s Parktown, Johannesburg, office.

The chosen candidate will be immersed in the world of journalism, learning how to recognize news stories and how to develop compelling editor pitch ideas.

Candidates can also observe what goes on in the newsroom behind the scenes as they participate in the program and learn where news is gathered, created, and disseminated.

The duration of this learnership will last for a total of 1 year.

You’ll develop the following specific skills during the program:

  • How to conduct effective interviews with newsmakers and sources
  • How to report on many news categories, such as fashion and beauty
  • How to get people interested in your tale
  • How to write for big news outlets, both print and broadcast
  • How to approach moral conundrums
  • How to become a “beat” journalist

What you can expect from the program:

  • Intensive lecture sessions
  • Guidance from experienced journalists and editors
  • Experience working in the field
  • An allowance each month to cover data and travel

Requirements

Please make sure you meet ALL of the following minimum entrance requirements before submitting your application because if you don’t, your application will be rejected:

  • Must be a citizen of South Africa.
  • Must have successfully finished Matric and received a 50% or above on the English exam.
  • A person must NOT be qualified (that is NQF level 6 and above).
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 35.
  • Must be jobless.
  • Availability for the whole period of the learnership program is required.
  • MUST NOT have taken part in or finished a SETA program.
  • Must have a keen interest in South African politics.
  • Must have worked for a local news agency or a school newspaper (advantageous).
  • Must be passionate about storytelling and writing.
  • Must be familiar with computers and the digital world.
