What is FNB?

FNB is South Africa’s oldest bank, dating back to the Eastern Province Bank, which was founded in Grahamstown in 1838.

FNB is now a part of FirstRand Bank Ltd. While looking back at FNB’s history, two things leap out.

The first is a survival narrative – various situations in South Africa have presented many enormous obstacles throughout our history, all of which FNB has successfully faced. Our track record serves as a solid basis for our next difficulties.

The second is a human-interest tale; our past has always been heavily impacted by the demands of the individuals we serve.

The Acacia tree in our company emblem represents our heritage well. Our roots in South Africa are deep, and we have developed as a result of our dedication to meeting the requirements of our clients and communities.

In 1998, the financial services operations of Rand Merchant Bank Holdings and Anglo American were amalgamated to become FirstRand Limited, a watershed moment in FNB’s history.

FNB was delisted from the JSE on May 22, 1998, in order to become a wholly-owned subsidiary of FirstRand, which was listed on the JSE on May 25, 1998.

On June 30, 1999, FirstRand’s banking interests were legally combined into a single organization to become FirstRand Bank. FNB, WesBank, and RMB are now subsidiaries of FirstRand Bank.
